I don't really want to get into this discussion. However, it's been repeated twice and it's simply wrong. However, before I make that correction, let me make it clear that SM is correct that, if all of DCS were to be moved, it would not be copyright infringement to copy all the content, including the content of the message boards.
However, he has stated it twice, and it's simply not so. If somebody posts original material here, it does not give DCS, MSN, or anyone else any rights to the material outside of DCS. The original author would still have copyright protection. However, since it's posted on this forum, DCS, i.e. the DCS management does have the right to move, modify, edit, delete the post within the confines of DCS or, if the site were to move, to copy it there as long as it's maintained for its original purpose.
However, what one could not legally do is to copy one's posts or other material to another site without the orignator's explicit permission. An exception to this would be where someone has written something exclusively for DCS such as some of the things written by various managers which can be accessed on some of the links.
It's basically the same as if someone had a poem or short story published in a collection of several others. The publisher can't turn around and publish those items in a different publication unless the author gave that publisher explicit permission to do so or assigned the copyright to the publisher.
In other words, as far as I've been able to research, as long as it was done in the "normal course of business", material such as is on the message boards can legally be moved. That's also why the managers can move certain threads to the "C" site without violating copyright. However, if one were to say, copy a post to "Beyond Divorce," that would be an infringement of the originator's copyright.

i thought about this some more last night.....jhall0626, i should have said "thank you" in my first response...your offer was very generous and kind, and i don't want you to feel it is unappreciated! DCS works because members go out of their way for each other.....image
SM and CalBob's responses both made sense to me, even though they are completely different opinions image......however....whether it is truly "legal" or not, i just wouldn't feel right moving member's contributions without their consent unless we had no other choice...and the posts are vast and many over the years, and a good portion of the members have moved on....trying to obtain their consent would be a herculean task to say the least....
there may very well come a day when we have to bail on MSN....i accept that as fact, simply because MSN has demonstrated they can and will do with the communities as they see fit....but i don't think that day is here yet.....jhall's suggestion sounds like a viable alternative for if/when that day arrives.....i suggest we view it in that light image

I can understand where you are coiming from but moving DCS elsewhere has come up before and as manger at the time I was always reluctant to do so simply because of the simplicity of the current arrangement.
For members its easy to join and its easy to post.
For managers and to be managers it is easy to maintain - anyone with minimal technical skills can add new pages or edit existing ones.
Over time this is important as managers come an go and it does mean that DCS is not technically dependent, which to me as an ex IT Manager is very important.

I support jhall. Vbulletin is great! The majority of my forums are vbulletin based, and easy to learn how to use. Not to mention MUCH more safer. Here, anyone on the net can come in and read all the messages, etc.image

This fact does concern me, having a stalker-prone stbx who is obsessed with every detail of my life. I wish there were some protection...so the managers could monitor any suspicious behavior...such as two people with the same last name and same town joining. Is this silly? I don't really have time to worry about such things...but it would be nice to be protected. Probably not possible in the cyber world. And, I think if people are going to read, then they should join.
Otherwise... I'll follow the leader on this one. Sky
