I thought that we were discussing a recommendation whether to move the MSN message boards to vBulletin, not on whether to move DCS to the domain that CM mentioned in his last post, so where did that come from? If someone wants to discuss that, in order to avoid confusion, I think that it best be discussed on another thread. I'm trying to avoid the temptation to rehash the past, but suffice it to say, that this was the original proposal put to the managers before and it was rejected for a host of reasons and, so far, I've seen nothing on this thread that would change my mind about that.
As for the problems mentioned about having insufficient time to move everything, in the event that MSN should stop providing communities, what that tells me is that there's a need to back up the data somewhere off of DCS and that was discussed in the past and I thought that it had been approved by management, but, to my knowledge, no action was ever taken.
Now, I have more questions about moving the vBoard. Justin, you're suggesting moving only the message board feature to that domain. What about the items to which a member of this site can link? Does this website support that? If not, are you suggesting that we have chat in one location, the message boards in another, and everything else somewhere else?
Also, as far as privacy goes, I'm with Pam and Nik on that. To begin with, even if you had a private site, assuming that you got an average of 3 to 4 people a day wanting to join the site, in order to avoid just anybody accessing the site, that means that there would have to be a screening process. However, while it might prevent the obvious problems such as bots joining the site to spam, there's no reasonable way to screen everyone and so there's still the possibility of stalkers or other nefarious people getting on the site.
Also, I generally don't join sites to which I need to apply and I'm sure that many others feel the same way. Have I done so in the past? Yes, but only if I already knew what was on there or if there was a business purpose.
I realize that MSN is buggy and sometimes down and I've been frustrated just like the rest of you about the inability to post although I'm not so sure that we might not have the same problems elsewhere. What I do know is that if you move a business, if the business is one where people have to come to it instead of your going to them, your clientele changes.
Also, like Pam, before I joined this site, and this is true for any non business related site, I like to take a look and see what's going on on the site, not just what is being posted, but the level of activity. However, my main concern is that, if the site were moved without either necessity requiring it, such as MSN pulling the plug, or without a huge demand to do so from a large majority of the members, or at least of the active members, the move would leave a lot of people behind and I don't think that we want to do that.
I have no doubt that both Justin and Darrel want to see what they consider improvements to the site. Also, I have no doubt that the proposed sites offer better security and more features, at least as far as managing them. In fact, if what they're saying is that those sites are technically superior, by any measure, I'd have to agree with them.
However, technical superiority is not always the issue. What is always the issue is what consumers want. If any of you recall when VCR's came out, there were two formats, BETA and the acronym for the other one escapes me right now. BETA was technically superior in every way, but consumers chose the other format. I don't recall if there was a cost differential, but as I recall, the main reason was that there was a lot more support available for the other format.
The same thing happened with personal computers. The MacIntosh products are more robust, better quality, and provide better security than the so called IBM compatible products. However, because of price, the fact that the Apple products remain closed source, meaning there's less available commercial software available, the vast majority of PC's today are windows based.
In fact, the above points out one of the problems with making things more secure. The more secure you make something, the less access that people have. Of course, you do want some screening such as the ability to ban people from accessing this site. Otherwise, the message boards would most likely be loaded with SPAM.
However, let me give you a real life example of the other extreme. As is fairly well known in the industry, in its efforts to keep their software "user friendly," Microsoft software has some rather notorious security problems. Partly to correct this, they introduced what they felt was better encryption prior to the final release of Windows 2000. I was one of those, who got to test one the Beta versions, and that particular encryption was very good. It was so good, in fact, that if you encrypted your data, nobody, not even the encrypter, could decrypt it. I.e., if you encrypted your data, nobody, including you, was able to read it. To Microsoft's credit, they did correct it fairly quickly although, in making the correction, their security is still not as good as it, imo, should be.
In other words, there needs to be a balance. I certainly understand the desire for security. However, in the extreme, one could make a website so secure that nobody could access it. In fact, I have some clients, who have done exactly that. Unless you're authenticated on their private network, you cannot access their website.
