"by the same token it doesn't mean ppl want to and it's not fair to assume that does not providing input want to move."
Nor did I suggest as much. It simply seemed, to me at least, we had a few dissenters, which is to be expected, and that the opinions of those dissenters were given abnormal weight. And now, it will be quite difficult to get any idea of where the membership stands, because about the time we started getting member input, this was moved to an area that doesn't retain even a portion of the discussion the main board does... not to mention requiring signing up for a different MSN Group.
"as far as I'm concerned no section of dcs should be private and I'm pretty sure that was the basis on which DCS was conceived"
Once again, I'm suggesting, that is all. I am not a policy-maker here, just giving options. If you think no section should be private, that's great. If the managers at-large think there shouldn't be private areas, so be it. I was only indicating that it's possible.
"nope we are not going to start policing DCS"
You already police DCS. The degree of policing is in question. Can people post here without registration? I don't think so... and if you want to keep it an "everyone reads free" situation then I have no problem with that.
"all u have to do is click on a name and it will take u to their album u don't have to go through 16 pages to find the album ur looking for"
I was actually talking about the lack of searching... I can't search for specific users or posts.
Bob mentions that I haven't really described features that will be used by individual members. He's right, so let me lay out a few of the more popular features I think might be of use to actual members.
I'm just naming a few off the top of my head, but they seem realistic. MSN Groups search function is effectively non-existent. If it is, I can't find it. Most forum software has excellent search functions, that make it a great deal easier to find posts, posts by specific users, recent entries, posts within specific time frames, specific topics etc. The power of vBulletin, and others, is that everything is easily accessible.
For whatever reasons, the message boards at MSN have only 2 or 3 topics... one of which is "general", which holds virtually everything. Different people get here at different stages in their divorce. I think it would do wonders to make topics that are a little less general. Right now the message frequency in the general message boards is so quick, that a a lot of messages may slowly make their way into the archives.
Now MSN Groups is perfectly capable of doing just that, but it's done in a way that would probably further complicate matters. vBulletin, however, is designed for multiple topics and sub-topics.
For example, if a woman who has a history of being abused comes on here, and she noticed a topic called "Victims of Abuse" it would be a great deal easier for her to connect with members that previously dealt with abuse. That's not to say it's not possible with MSN Groups, but it's easier with vBulletin.
Secondarily, MSN Groups information is scattered, the links to the left are a mishmash of information, and that's due to MSN Groups NOT being designed as a CMS, but it is being used as one. The easier information is to access, the better.
However, again, I can't possibly know what features would appeal to whom. To me, the technical aspect is more than enough, and I realize that's not enough for most.
Once again, I would seriously recommend that a "test" of some sort be setup. Then, we can invite the managers and a groups of members to see what they think. Honestly, I'd love for the hesitant members to a shot at vBulletin, and see what they think. We can beat this discussion to death, but perhaps a visual representation would be the best available option.
That way, everyone can get a better feel for exactly "what" they want DCS to be... and perhaps that would make it easier to meet Bob's suggestion that the managers determine what criteria need be met.
I've only selected vBulletin as an example, because the majority of software out now is designed with vBulletin in mind. If the managers and members don't like vBulletin on its face, they aren't going to like any of the alternatives.
So again, what I should have proposed at first, is that the managers vote, draw straws, or whatever it is you guys do to make decisions :), on whether or not you want to see vBulletin in action. I think that's a starting point.
